Transmission Fluid Service Cost: Refill or Exchange?

Compare published $288.95 and $499.95 transmission services, see what filters and fluid exchange include, and identify the quote that fits the gearbox.

Transmission-fluid quotes are easy to miscompare because a drain-and-refill, a filter replacement and a larger fluid exchange can all be advertised as transmission service. The same label does not establish the same amount of work. A conventional automatic, CVT and other gearbox designs can require different fluids and procedures even when their selectors look similar.

The published October 2026 examples below identify their providers and restrictions. They are reference offers for different vehicles, not a national average or a choice between interchangeable jobs. First establish the installed transmission and due maintenance, then ask shops to price that procedure and the final charges.

Key figures

  • $288.95 Price Honda ten-speed exchange, CVTs excluded
  • $499.95 Riverside Volkswagen transmission service, starting price

Published offers have different gearbox and filter scope

Price Honda in Dover advertises a $288.95 service for ten-speed transmissions with dipsticks and says it is not for CVTs. Its description lists an exchange of 12 quarts of transmission and torque-converter fluid. Confirm that the vehicle and procedure qualify, rather than extending the offer to every Honda automatic.

Riverside Volkswagen advertises transmission service starting at $499.95, with filter replacement and a drain-and-refill. The word “starting” matters: model, materials and other conditions can change the final amount. Its advertised mileage recommendation is also a dealership-menu statement, not proof of the factory interval for every Volkswagen transmission.

The maintenance budget guide separates scheduled fluid service from transmission diagnosis or repair. A service-menu allowance should not be treated as the cost of fixing a gearbox that slips or has a warning.

The required fluid and method belong in the estimate

Ask for the transmission identification, manufacturer’s fluid specification, amount to be used and procedure. A shop should clarify whether it removes a pan, replaces a filter or seal, drains and refills, or performs another exchange process. Each line changes the materials, access and labor being purchased.

A capacity figure also needs context. The amount used in a drain-and-refill can differ from the transmission’s total capacity. A quote listing 12 quarts for one exchange should not become a requirement for another vehicle simply because both have automatic gearboxes. Comparing price per quart alone ignores the access and filter work.

For arithmetic only, $288.95 divided by the advertised 12 quarts is about $24.08 per quart of service spend. That number is not a retail fluid price or an itemized material charge. The advertised amount buys a service, so presenting the quotient as what the fluid itself costs would be misleading.

The coolant-service guide explains a similar distinction between top-up, replacement and a repair. Fluids belong to separate systems; a package topping up levels does not document a transmission-fluid replacement.

The manual and history determine when service is due

The 2026 Honda Pilot manual includes transmission-fluid replacement under Maintenance Minder item 3. That model example connects a reminder to work; it does not create a universal transmission-service interval for every Honda or establish that Price Honda’s advertised exchange applies to the cited Pilot.

Look up the vehicle’s model year, transmission and use conditions. Ask whether the recommendation comes from its manual, a condition finding or a dealership package. A shop’s promotional “every 40,000 miles” statement should be checked against the installed transmission’s manufacturer instructions rather than accepted across an entire brand.

Review the last service invoice for the fluid and procedure. A generic “inspection completed” record does not establish that the fluid was replaced. An invoice for a different gearbox or an undocumented additive also does not prove the service met the manufacturer’s specification.

The services sold too early guide helps request evidence without dismissing due maintenance. If a shop cannot explain why an exchange is being recommended instead of the specified procedure, obtain that explanation before approving the package.

A selector's appearance cannot establish the installed gearbox or required fluid. The estimate should identify the transmission from the vehicle information.

Diagnosis and additives are separate decisions

A transmission service is not a diagnosis for slipping, delayed engagement, leaks or a warning. Ask which findings connect the complaint to the proposed repair. A routine service can be due while a fault also requires assessment; paying for one does not automatically address the other.

In a hypothetical quote, an assumed $150 diagnostic charge plus $300 fluid service totals $450 before other costs. If the shop credits $75 toward the authorized service, the retained total becomes $375. If it credits the whole diagnostic charge, it becomes $300. These are examples of credit arithmetic, not either dealership’s policy or rates.

Ask why a cleaner or additive is listed, whether the manufacturer allows it for that transmission, and whether it is optional. A package name such as “protection” does not establish compatibility or a measurable benefit. Its price and purpose should remain visible instead of being absorbed into an unexplained total.

A final total and repair order prevent duplicated costs

The difference between the advertised provider examples is $499.95 − $288.95 = $211. That is useful for recognizing a substantial scope difference, but it is not a saving available by substituting one vehicle’s service for the other’s. Compare competing estimates only once both describe the work required for the same transmission.

An assumed $499.95 funding target over 24 months requires about $20.83 monthly; over 12 months it requires about $41.66. Those periods only show how savings change. They do not establish a service interval or a reason to postpone an existing fault.

The FTC recommends an estimate identifying the condition, parts and anticipated labor, followed by a repair order showing the work performed. For this job, keep the fluid specification, quantity, filter and seal details and service date with the odometer reading. Those records inform the next recommendation and a future sale.

A fluid service cannot assess every gearbox fault

Arrange professional assessment and follow the vehicle’s warning instructions when shifting deteriorates, fluid leaks or a warning appears. Do not authorize a generic exchange as a substitute for identifying the cause.

If the shop discovers another problem during service, ask for an updated estimate before the authorization limit is exceeded. Specify whether the fluid work will still be charged if the transmission is opened for a repair that duplicates part of the procedure. That conversation can prevent paying for the same access twice.

Questions people ask

Is $288.95 a Honda CVT service price?

No. Price Honda's offer expressly excludes CVTs and describes ten-speed transmissions with dipsticks. Confirm the installed transmission and offer eligibility.

Why can a $499.95 quote include different work?

Riverside Volkswagen's starting service includes a filter replacement and drain-and-refill. The other published example describes an exchange for a different gearbox. They are not interchangeable quotes.

Does a fluid exchange fix slipping?

The service price does not establish the cause of a shifting problem. Diagnosis and any repair should be explained separately from routine maintenance.

Does every transmission need service at 40,000 miles?

Use the manufacturer's instructions for the model and transmission. A dealership's general menu recommendation is not the factory schedule for every gearbox.
